Cardinal Faulhaber Appeals For Frank
There is no foundation in reports that have appeared in some sections of the Press, giving the Vatican view on the Nuremberg trial sentences, or in the
report that the Pope has directly intervened on behalf of Hans Frank, former Governor of Poland, who was converted during the trial.
" No one has been authorised to give the Pope's opinion on the Nuremberg trial sentences," said Vatican Radio on Monday. " We have been authorised to state that a recent statement by a so-called spokesman of the Vatican, giving a summary of the Holy Father's opinion on the sentences is entirely gratuitous and without foundation," added Vatican Radio.
The initiative in a plea for clemency for Frank, condemned to death by the Nuremberg Tribunal, came from Cardinal Faulhaber, Archbishop of Mun
ich. according to Reuter, telegraphed Frank's counsel saying : "Please let the pica for mercy for Frank be handed in. as intercession is on its way to the highest Church authority."
Frank had originally refused to make a plea for mercy. It is believed that the Pope has replied to Cardinal Faelhaber's plea with a " Disposition towards Mercy "; this disposition Cardinal Faulhaber may pass on to the Allied Control Council for consideration when Frank's plea is heard.
