Gutierrez speaks out

GUSTAVO Gutierrez, one of the leading lights of liberation theology, has delivered Cafod’s prestigious annual lecture.

He gave the 2005 Pope Paul VI Memorial Lecture on November 4.

Fr Gutierrez, a Peruvian Dominican who spent years working with the poor in the slums of Lima, spoke on “A Theology for Today: the Option for the Poor in 2005”.

As a priest in the Archdiocese of Lima Fr Gutierrez says that his parishioners in the city’s poor neighbourhoods taught him “volumes about hope in the midst of suffering”. It was a lesson he never forgot, and is a key theme in his highly influential writings.
