From Mr Richard Brumby SIR – I was delighted to read that Pope Benedict has appointed your columnist Canon David McGough as an auxiliary bishop of Birmingham (Report, Oct 28).

Canon McGough’s appointment brings to six the number of old boys of Cotton College who are currently bishops in England – Bishop Budd (Plymouth), Bishop Brain (Salford), Conry (Arundel and Brighton), Bishop Dunn (Hexham and Newcastle), Bishop McCartie (Northampton Emeritus) and Bishop-elect McGough. In addition, Bishop Pargeter taught at the college for many years, finally as rector, before becoming an auxiliary bishop of Birmingham.

Old Cottonians also include the current grand president of the Catenian Association and the president of the Law Society.

Not bad, I am sure you will agree, for a school which closed in 1987 after 225 years existence in England.

Yours faithfully, RICHARD BRUMBY Gerrards Cross, Bucks
