COMPARISONS of the prison population in Britain and Western Europe (October 28) ignore the point that Britain is the only country in Western Europe, apart from Ireland, which does not have conscription. While National Service may not have the character-improving effects which some people claimed for it, it does at least keep a considerable part of the most crime-prone section of the population — males aged 14 to 24 — out of circulation for a year or two.
