S1R,—I have read in the last issue of THE CATHOLIC HERALD an article on Austria which I feel is not quite rightly Informed. I em adding a brief account of the members of the new Government which may show that this is a purely put-up ehow and not at all to be welcomed. PRIME MINISTER DR. KARL
Aged 75, Renner is the son of a sehoohnaster of a preparatory school in Vienna. He belonged to the right wing
of the Social Democratic Party. He wrote a book on the questions of Nationalities in the old Empire. He became the first Chancellor of the Austrian Republic and as such headed the delegation at the Peace Conference of St. Germain. He was already then an advocator of the idea of an Anschluss with Germany. He wise on the board of the Social Democratic Party tine vies the last President of the -National Rat " (Parliament) which was dissolved by Dollfuss. After the Socialist rising in 1934 he was detained for two months 'and then released. When the Germans invaded Austria he wrote en article which was published M the Neues Wiener Tagblait welcoming the Anschluss of Austria to Germany. He was one of the few politicians who was never arrested by the Germans.
MINISTERS OF STATE.
LEOPOLD KUNSCIIACK (Christian Socialise, aged about 80, he was a town councillor of Vienna. He organised the Christian workers of Vienna and was lather popular with them. He was suggested to Dollfuss for a ministerial job, but was found to be too old mentally.

JOHANN KOPLENIK, aged about 50 (Communist), lived for 12 years in Moscow and was during the war the Chairman of the Free Austrian Committee in Moscow, N.B. The. Ministers of State seem to form, like in the Russian Government, the Politbuicau, which in the ,case of Austria is composed of old people and one active Communist.
MINISTER OF INTERIOR AND FINANCE, Mr. HORNER (Communist) and ZIMMERMANN (non-party) are unknown.
MINISTER' OF AGRICULTURE.
BUCHINGER (Christian Socialist), aged about 65, is one of the worst corruptionists known in Austria. He was involved in the famous scandal of the %stern Benk.
MINISTER OF INDUSTRY.
HEINL (Christian Socialist), aged about 60. was in onc of the Dollfuss Cabinets but was asked to leave es it was alleged that he had become involved in some financial scandal. He is alleged to have accumulated quite a fortune while a minister.
MINISTER FOR EDUCATION.
FISCHER (Communist), son of a Colonel in Grim became one of the leaders of the Austrian Communist Party. Wrote a play called Lenin. Is the Austrian representative of the Komintern in Moscow. Is alleged to have been the go-between between the German officers (after Stalingrad) and the Moscow Government and to have succeeded in establishing the Free German Committee in Moscow. He was a member of the Austrian Committee in Moscow and often spoke on the wireless. He is extremely intelligent and capable.
L1EUT.-COLONEL WINTERER was one of the organisers of the Socialist private army in Austrie called the Schutzbund.
MINISTER OF JUSTICE.'
GEROE (non-party) was Staatsanwelt (State Prosecutor) and President of the Football Association.
MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS.
RAM) (Christian Socialist). Trade Unionist. aged about 60, known in Austria for his complete incompetence in politics. Was made Minister of State to keep the balance between the narties and because all the other mem bers of the v had refused the job
of " seat fielder." Rather a pathetic
and ridiculous figure.
N.B. The names of all the undersecretaries to the various Ministries have not yet been eublishee
[We are grateful for this information, which is from an unimpeachable sourer. Our first exuberance, however, was due to a feeling t:tat things might have been so much worse and to our wish that some sort of modes vivendi between Russia and the West. for the sake of world peace should become possible.
