Poems of the Countryside. Pictures by Gordon Beningfield. (Viking £10.95)
ADMIRERS of Gordon Beningfield's work will pounce on this volume for there are 70 pictures in full colour meadows, hillsides, flowers, birds, trees, streams and animals.
The poems have been chosen for their rural or seasonal themes. Included are many old favourites, Browning's HomeThoughts from Abroad, Manley Hopkins' Pied Beauty, Wordsworth's Daffodils for example, and some lesser-known ones such as Kipling's The Way Through the Woods and Frances Cornford's beautiful poem The Hills.
There is no credit to the selector of the verses which is a pity as there is a sensitivity of choice that shouldn't go uncongratulated. You may cavil at the price of nearly £11, but I guarantee you will find it difficult to part with this book and may well wrap it up and give it to yourself.
Incidentally, it would make an excellent present for a child, just beginning to discover the joys of poetry, as much as for an adult. The poetry is timeless and the pictures capture the mood. Definitely a book to pick up again and again.
