Church calls for peace as India and Pakistan face war
CHURCH leaders in India called for restraint as tensions rose between India and Pakistan following Indian air strikes on alleged Pakistani intruders in the states of Jammu and Kashmir.
Fr George Pereira, deputy secretarygeneral of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, said the Church hopes the two countries will hold peace talks.
Days after the Indian air force struck on May 26, Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee reportedly described the situation as "warlike", while Pakistan promised to send its foreign minister to India for peace talks.—CNS
