BERNADETTE
TO mark the centenary of the Apparitions at Lourdes, a miracle play called "The Maid and the Grotto ". written and produced by Alan Rye, K.S.G., is being given four performances on next Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Lourdes Convent, Withdean, Brighton, a convent which has peculiarly strong connections with St. Bernadette.
In 1903, when the Religious Orders were being driven from France through current anticlerical legislation, Bishop Lelong of Meyers wrote to Bishop Bourne of Southwark to ask if the Sisters of Charity and Christian Instruction of Nevers-the convent where Bernadette lived for 13 years until her death in 1879-could find a refuge in his diocese.
Thus it was that the Lourdes Convent at Brighton came into being. Soon afterwards, they were joined by Sister Marie-Therese, wile had known Bernadette at Meyers. This direct link between Sernadette and the Convent Grammar School at Brighton was only broken when Sister Marie.Th6ase died four years ago aged 98.
