Guyana lets nuns stay

GUYANA'S government has reversed an earlier decision to oust Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, and will allow them to stay for at least another year according to a priest in the country's capital city.
The change of heart, after a personal appeal by the Nobel Peace Prize winning nun to Guyana's President Hoyte, was reported in a government-owned newspaper. The missionaries will now be able to apply for a further extension of their visas.
Fr Andrew Morrison, editor of the Catholic Standard, an independent paper which has been subjected to frequent attacks by the Guyana government, said that Bishop Benedict Singh of Georgetown had also intervened with the President on behalf of Mother Teresa's nuns.
