PILGRIMS GO BY LORRY AND LIMOUSINE

And meet Abbott and Costello'

Two Leeds girls. Miss Sheila Scully and Miss ElsieCrisp, of Copgrove Road. who set off recently on a 1.600 mile hitch-hike pilgrimage to Rome, report two outstanding incidents in their progress as far as Gap. on the road to Nice. Their first lift was in a monstrous lorry going towards Fontainehleu. The driver was a fat, jolly, individual, but his mate was thin and quiet. The resemblance to Abbott and Costello stood out, especially when the driver began to sing French love songs in a voice loud enough to fill a cathedral. with rolling eyes and one hand on his heart.

From the ridiculous to the sublime, they then travelled.hundreds of miles in the luxurious car of a Belgian who explained away his kindness by saying that he wished to repay the English in some little measure because they liberated him from one of the worst German concentration camps.

He still bears the marks in the form of a branded prisoner's number on his arm and permanent illhealth.
