Fire-raiser free, priest jailed

A professed atheist who attempted to burn down Poland's most revered shrine at Czestochowa has been set free by the Communist police after brief questioning.

But Fr. Raczynski, Superior of the Josna Gora monastery in which is the chapel containing the miraculous image of Our Lady, was arrested a few days after informing the police.

A group of children playing on the ancient ramparts surrounding the monastery saw smoke rising from the chapel and reported it to the Fathers who quickly brought the fire tinder control. Made suspicious by the strong smell of petrol, they searched the attic and discovered a man hiding in a corner.

The Fathers summoned the police who took the man away. However, Czestochowa inhabitants claim that he has not been punished and has sinoe been seen on the streets.

The following Sunday, Fr. Kajetan Raczynski, told the faithful of the incident during Mass. He added: " Even if our miraculous chapel burned, no one would be able to tear from our hearts our love and attachment for our Mother and Queen."

A few days later he and an unidentified priest, it is reported, were summoned to the police station. The Priests 'believed they were wanted as witnesses in connection with the fire incident. But they never returned from the police station and their present fate is unknown.
