FR. MARTINDALE RECALLS CHURCHLESS PINNER Festival of

St. Philomena at Only English Shrine Prom a Special Correspondent The annual festival of St. Philomena, when her relics are carried through the streets of Pinner, took place on Sunday last. The proceedings commenced in the morning, when the beautiful wrought iron gates in front of her shrine were blessed, and preceded Solemn High Mass, sung by Fr. C. Damien Tighe, S.D.S., assisted by Fr. Otman, S.D.S., and the Rev. J. Caulfield. Mr Bernard Redding, of St, Matthew's Church, Northwood, acted as organist, and Mr J. C. Stibbs was Altar M.C.
In the evening a long procession assembled in the grounds of the Convent of the Mother of God,
opposite the national shrine of St. Philomena, which is in the Church of St. Luke, and moved slowly through the old-world village to High Street.
The clergy taking part were: Fr. J. Caulfield, St. Luke's, Pinner; Fr. C. C. Martindale, S.J.; Fr. C. Smith, S.D.S., St. Joseph's, Wealdstone, who carried the Blessed Sacrament; Fr. M. Lynch, Our Lady of Lourdes, Uxbridge; and Fr. J. Buckley, of St. Albans.
TRAVELS FROM BERLIN
Mr William Hastings is a living testimony to the value of faith. Whilst suffering from an advanced stage of diabetes, he attended the shrine and in response to prayer received a marvellous cure. He travels from Berlin every year to carry the banner of St. Philomena. In the High Street, Fr. Martindale gave a short address, in which he said he remembered when he was a young Protestant man living in Harrow that there was no Catholic Church in Pinner. The fact that there was one now was due to the hard work of Fr. Caulfield and the loving help of willing workers. After the address the Credo was sung, and the procession returned to the convent grounds, where Fr. Caulfield gave Benediction. At the conclusion the relics of St. Philomena were placed on the altar, which made an inspiring picture against the background of stately old trees.
