Dr Ramsey to preach in Belfast

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsey, will make his second visit to Belfast within a year towards the end of this month. He will arrive on Saturday, April 20, and the following day will preach in the Chapel of the Resurrection of Queen's University. At 8 p.m. he will address students in the chapel. During the afternoon he will preach at Evensong in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast. On his visit to the city at the end of April last he visited victims of violence. including three soldiers, in hospital.
MP wants ban on atheists teaching RE
Mr. Ronald Bray. Conservative MP for Rossendale, Lancashire, is pressing the Department of Education and Science to ensure that teachers of religion in State schools should have some personal faith. His action follows the statement by a teacher taking part in a television programme that he was a specialist in religious instruction but a militant atheist.
Inter-American Bishops' meeting
Twenty-two Bishops from Latin America, the United States and Canada will meet in Miami from April 29 to May 3 to discuss evangelisation, it was announced in Washington last week. It will be the ninth Inter-American Bishops' conference, one of a series of annual consultations to exchange ideas and promote good relationships between the bishops of North and South America.
Mrs Jill Knight to head Lifeline
Mrs 'Jill Knight, Conservative MP for Edgbaston, Birmingham. has become chairman of the trustees of Lifeline UK, the pregnancy care service which has been set up to help any mother-to-be to avoid abortion, So far it has opened three offices — in London. Birmingham and Manchester — and plans are in hand for offices in Bristol, Coventry and Newcastle upon Fyne.
Tribesmen kick doubter to death
Christian tribesmen kicked a man to death in a remote village church in Papua-New Guinea because they believed he was possessed by the devil, government officers reported in Port Moresby. They said the man had challenged Evangelical preachers visiting the village to prove their divine powers by healing a deaf ,mute.
Catholic teachers to meet in bar
An informal meeting for Catholic delegates to the Easter Conference of the National Union of Teachers at Eastbourne will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Sussex Bar of the Burlington flotel. The new president of the NUT, Mr J. Caulfield, is a Catholic.
All night vigil at St. Edmund's
A vigil was held from II p.m. to 6,30 a.m. at St Edmund's School, Dover, giving a dramatic representation of the victory of good over evil. This was followed by young people from the Hythe parish with a presentation of the trial of Jesus.
Brownies diamond jubilee year
To celebrate the Brownie s diamond jubilee year Brownie Guides of the 5th Chester-le-Street Pack embroidered six kneelers with the Brownie badge and presented them to Fr James Scott for the altar rails at St Cuthbert's Church. These kneelers were part of a cornpetition to mark the diamond jubilee year of the Brownie Guide Section — founded in 1914 — and have already won first place in the first part of the competition.
Mass for Pompidou refused
Two French priests have refused to hold a Mass in memory of President Pompidou because, they said, "We did not want any confusion between the Christian faith and a Mass linked very closely to a public occasion." The authorities have issued a communique regretting "such an attitude by priests."
Holy Land plea by Pontiff
Pope Paul has appealed for money to help Christians in the Holy Land and urged Arabs and Israelis to make efforts for peace.
'Certified' Polish priest freed
Fr Piotr Zabielski, the Polish priest who was "certified" and sent to a mental institution last December after saying Mass at his home, has been set free. Earlier the Polish Bishops' Conference had issued a statement protesting against the authorities' "abuse of power" and saying that the priest was in good health.
Bonn allows abortion aid
The West German Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament) has passed a law making legally-approved abortions free of charge.
