Downside boys kicked out of touch

DENIS THATCHER was a top guest at the the
centenary rugby match between Downside and Sherborne public schools, held in Stratton-onthe-Fosse last Saturday in front of 2,200 spectators.
Mr Thatcher, himself a former rugby referee, saw Sherborne win 13-0 in what was, according to Downside headmaster Dom Antony Sutch, "a clean, spirited and skilful game".
A black tie dinner was held the previous evening for 200 guests. All the past captains of both teams were invited.
A big commemorative plaque was unveiled before the match by Ian Norrington, President of St Gregory's Society, and Mr Peter Lapping, Headmaster of Sherborne. Downside's rugby coach is England player Jonothan Callard, and one of its recent old boys is rugby star Simon Halliday.
