Sir, — Canon Quinlan (December 3) is surely being unfair

when he condemns contraception on the grounds of its supposed side-effects. If nervous disorders result from contraception, Canon Quinlan should also recognise that they result from the uncertainty and dissatisfaction of the 'safeperiod' and from a family too large for a mother's strength and the family economy, If recent publications are to be believed, contraception has saved many Catholic marriages, the only tensions resulting front feelings of guilt.

It is surely unrealistic to suggest that the majority of couples practising contraception, find that it has adverse effects on themselves and their marriage.
