BARON DE GAIFFIER D'HESTROY
By the Baron de Gaiffier d'Hestroy's unexpected death, Belgium loses a diplomatist of much distinction. who has represented Belgium in France since 1916, first as minister plenipotentiary, then (since 1919) as ambassador.
He was born in May, 1866, which is tantamount to saying that the age-lime ought to have been applied to him four years ago: another proof of how much his services were appreciated by his government.
He entered the Belgian Foreign Office in 1887, and was sent to the Berlin legation the next year. He was then in Lisbon, Madrid. Vienna, Pekin, Athens, Cairo, and, in 1909, Bucharest. He was then recalled to Brussels, entrusted with the "general direction of political affairs," and took part in drawing up Belgium's famous answer to the German ultimatum in 1914. He remained at this post throughout the first two years of the war.
All the festivities connected with the Belgian national fete of July 21 were countermanded in Paris owing to the death of the baron.
