THE Catholic Building Society reported this week that home loans had passed the £1 million mark last year, for the first time in the society's 2I-year history.
The directors report for 1980 said assets had exceeded £5 million, and savings invested reached almost £2 million.
Though the society's loans to first-time buyers fell to just over half of all loans, nearly a third of house buyers had incomes of less than £6,000 in 1980. The CBS reported loans of 60 per cent on properties built before 1919, compared with 28 per cent for all societies.
Another highlight of the year was the opening of an agency in Leeds. The chairman, Mrs Nona Byrne said all savings at Leeds would help local families. Four loans were completed in December 1980.
She said "Subject to growing support from Leeds investors the society could assist one family a week into a home of its own in 1981."
